MitoSWAB™ Test – information for parents
MitoSWAB™ is a non-invasive way to assess mitochondrial function in children. Thanks to a cheek swab, we obtain material for analysis without pain or stress. The test can be performed at our clinic in Warsaw or by mail throughout Poland.
Purpose of the test
MitoSWAB evaluates mitochondrial function. The analysis includes components of the electron transport chain: complexes I, II, III, and IV. This makes it possible to detect and monitor mitochondrial dysfunctions. Such disorders may affect a child’s nervous system as well as overall health. For this reason, it is worth performing the test and consulting the results with a doctor if there are any concerns.
How the test is performed
A sample is collected using a swab. The inside of the child’s cheeks is gently swabbed. The procedure is quick, painless, and simple. Importantly, it can be carried out either in our clinic or at home. We send a test kit with clear instructions to ensure the entire process is comfortable.
Duration of the test
Sample collection takes just a few minutes.
How to prepare your child for the test?
One hour before collection, rinse your child’s mouth with plain water. If the child cannot rinse, a small sip of water is enough.
he child should not eat for 60 minutes before the test. After brushing teeth, wait at least 30 minutes.
If your child regularly takes medications or supplements, consult your doctor. Some preparations may affect mitochondrial function.
Interpretation of results
Each patient receives a detailed description of the mitochondrial component analysis. The report includes interpretation of possible abnormalities and guidance for further diagnostics or therapy. This way, you know what steps to consider next together with a specialist.
